O-B-E-D-I-E-N-C-E: Part One

Continuing with my new mini-series! I think I just like saying that; but I really do want to continue and feel bad I haven't posted sooner.

Obedience is a demonstration of trust.

I remember being at Olive Garden for lunch and we had ordered their soup and salad. I gave Klayton one of the jalapenos that they always put in their salads and told Klayton to try it, at first he said no; but I insisted to which he eventually gave in-he made quite the face! The people at the next table over were caught giggling just as we were; but now weeks later if I tell Klayton to try a new food…he’s not quick to comply. Why? Because he remembers what happened last time he did as he was told and he didn’t like it! In that area I created a lack of trust. Children are more apt to obey when they know the parent can be trusted.
When a child is asked to obey and they do so; but it hurts them, trust in that area is gone. Do you realize that is a two way street? Klayton LOVES to be outdoors and sorry; but this Kansas heat is just a little much for this Mama! Klayton is content to just sit on our front porch with me sitting at the recliner that’s next to the window where I can see him clearly. He has been found sitting on the porch step many times this summer and each time I tell him to sit and not to leave the porch and he doesn’t leave I tend to not move my eyes to check on him EVERY. SINGLE. SECOND. I am trusting him in this matter, I trust that he will obey because he has proven it and if I need to leave the recliner for a quick minute I know when I come back Klayton will still be sitting on the front porch step. If I were to look out the window and find Klayton off the porch, I would be hesitant to trust him in this issue next time.
Trust and obedience is a relationship. Obedience often asks us to do what we don't feel like doing or doing something without knowing the end result. How many kids like to be asked to pick up their toys? I smile just thinking about this...

"Klayton, pick up your toys?
"NO!"
"Klayton..."said with a little warning in my voice.

After about half the toys are picked up, Klayton is found playing "forgetting" about the task at hand and he's reminded once again and the conversation I described ensues once again! I know Klayton doesn't like it; but I also know that there is an end result that I can see, responsibility. I can see character that can and is developing if he just obeys. Even as adults God often asks us to do something or might tell us to stop doing something and we don't understand why, we might not like it or can't see the end result; but just as we see in our children character that needs to be worked on God sees a big picture. I should mention that over the course of time now, Klayton will now OFTEN pick up his toys without being asked...his obedience developed responsibility. Make sense? Thankful that Klayton is learning to obey and to see a demonstration of trust through that obedience! Now that I have a child of my own, I am beginning to "see" things and realize things about my relationship to my Heavenly Father and how my obedience to what He says or ask pleases Him.

O-B-E-D-I-E-N-C-E: Intro

I have been thinking about doing a post all about obedience. As I write it it becomes longer and longer! Eh. So, tonight as I was working on it I thought to myself, "why not divide it up into a mini series?" Then I said, "sounds good Kendra...!" Haha! So, here goes nothing:

“Klayton, go potty!”
With a smile, my little guy runs the opposite way from the bathroom.
“Klayton, go potty!”
He darts beneath my knees to hide on the other side of the bed.
“Klayton, OBEY!”
I quickly found myself laughing inwardly.

I get frustrated when Klayton doesn’t obey because I often forget that obedience just doesn’t happen-it has to be taught, it has to be a choice. Our natural state is to do what we want to do, not as others want us to do.
When Klayton doesn’t obey, I often will ask him, “Can you hear me?”
Sometimes he nods his head yes and I tell him, “if you can hear me there is no reason to not do what I said.”
Then there are other times he will shake his head no and my reply, “how convenient!”
I ask him that question to get him to stop in his tracks and hopefully get an opportunity to explain that obedience is doing right the first time.
Before we even had Klayton I remember meeting a missionary family to the Amazon Jungle. At the time their little boy was six months old and just starting to crawl. The couple spoke about how important it was to begin instilling obedience in him-even then. It was important because going to the jungle they knew there would be potential dangers…if that little boy was about to cross paths with a rattle snake and they said, “stop” they might not have another opportunity to say stop and it could mean life or death if they had to tell him twice!
My desire is that Klayton will obey the first time. Yeah, it will be nice when we are out and about that I could call for him to come and he would without me having to “chase” him down…not that it has happened before! Ha! When I think about why I want him to obey right away three reasons come to mind:
1. Obedience is a demonstration of trust.
2. Obedience is a demonstration of love.
3. Obedience reaps blessings.
In the course of the next week I would like to continue exploring those reasons, so stay tuned for, Obedience: A Demonstration of Trust!

Ten on Tuesday

1. Is this an optical illusion of my husband slam dunking a basketball?

2. There is a reason I am a city girl-I can't handle the odor of cows relieving themselves.
3. Found a new eye shadow color that I love, Golden Halo by Maybelliene. I like to use it with purple or black eye shadow in my crease and outer corner of my eye!
4. It is often best to keep your opinions to yourself.
5. A while back I mentioned my concern about Klayton's lack of speech...don't think that will be mentioned again! There will be an upcoming post about this!
6. With children come humbling moments...
7. Bragging moment: While in Kohl's the other day a lady was going to put her shopping cart away when Klayton went up to her and did it for her. The lady congratulated me for already raising a gentleman-and told me that he is already more of a gentleman than most men today. I told her we are doing the best we can by God's grace!
8. Apparently, I have a brain disorder!

9. Ulta is one of my new favorite stores and it helps that when I bought a gift from there, they gave me a gift! A rolling weekend suitcase!
10. And just for fun, another pic that serves as a reminder that I am indeed a Scentsy consultant!

I hope your Tuesday is happy and that your home smells yummy!

From Potty Training to Food Apps

Over at Kelly's Korner, it is Show Us Your Life-Favorite Apps! I thought this would be a fun link up since I seem to be in a blogging rut, though I do have a couple of posts up my sleeve!

I try not to have A TON of apps flooding my phone screen, it just gets to be a little overwhelming and well sometimes they just don't get used! So, drumroll please for my favorite apps...in no particular order:

1. Potty Time

I am currently in the middle of this journey called, potty training! This app offers a game, a story to read, virtual sticker chart, a potty training song as well as a phone call for successes and accidents!

My little guy loves this app and it makes the time go by faster!

2. PepperPlate

So simple to use for creating my grocery list by category or shopping aisle however I prefer! I can also use it to create my menu and I can use the planner to record my menu! As I get my grocery items I simply check them off the list and they disappear-no more paper lists that I always seem to forget anyway!

3. PhotoMarkr

Not that I have any stalkers reading my blog; but since I post pics of my family I like to protect those pictures with a watermark. I finally found this one that I can create a watermark for my phone pictures and it is SUPER easy to use!

4. RoadAhead

Over the years we have traveled A LOT and that is no understatement. This app searches for you on the road and then tells you what is at the next exit! You can choose what you want it to find for you at the next exit. I have mine set to find restaurants, gas stations and lodging! It also tells you how far it is to the next exit as well as how far your choice is!

5. Pic Jointer

I love taking photos with my phone and sometimes I take several of the same pose of Klayton, however, his expressions seem to change....SO, with this app I can make a collage to save to my phone or to send to my friends!

6. Pinterest

I don't think an explanation is needed!

There you have it folks, some of my favorite phone apps!

Ten on Tuesday

1. Last week I got 7 inches of hair chopped off! It feels SO different and it feels SO good!
2. I have been in such a blogging rut and I really hope that I am pulling out of it.
3. Last Friday our church had a ladies game night! I had so much fun! We played Bunko!
4. My little coffee drinker.

5. For game night I made a copycat Starbucks cold drink. Recipe: 10 cups coffee, 1/2 c brown sugar, 1/2 c white sugar, 1/2 c vanilla creamer! So yummy and easy-this is what Klayton is actually drinking in the above picture!
6. On Sunday we had a church fellowship and I made a Butterfinger Trifle-by the time I got to it I literally had to scrape the sides for some! It was a hit and so easy! Bake the brownies of your choice in a 13x9 pan, make 2 pkgs of chocolate instant pudding according to directions, use a bag of mini butterfingers and 16 ounces cool whip. I layered brownies (cut into small cubes), chocolate pudding to fill the cracks, cool whip, 6 mini butterfingers crushed and repeat!
7. If you own a Kindle and are a fan of Karen Kingsbury, as of last night they were selling the combo of Even Now and Ever After for $1.99!
8.
9. Yesterday morning I woke up to a little boy shaking me, why? Because he wanted to snuggle...those moments are priceless to me and will always be cherished. Those moments are perfect reminders to me of why Klayton was worth the wait and is my greater yes.
10. I have a lot on my heart that needs prayer. Would you please pray for me and my special unspokens today? Have a Happy Tuesday!

Pet Peeves

I admit, it is no longer Friday-its 12:30 a.m and I missed linking up to A Blonde Ambition for Confessional Friday by 30 minutes. Do you think they will notice? Maybe.
I, however, could not miss this topic link up: pet peeves!

If you know me well, you have figured out that I have a few pet peeves! Though I just asked my husband if he knew what they were and are, his answer, "No!" Ha! I do know what they are, so go ahead-ask me!

To name a few, in no particular order:

1. Cars taking up two spaces.
I admit that I am not always the best person at parking; but I do know that you don't park OVER the line!

And, I also don't appreciate getting excited over what I think is a free parking spot! I often find myself speeding up to get there more quickly, only to realize there is car there. The car is either a stupid smart car or pulled all the way up in the space.

2. Spelling errors!
Oh. My. Word. I can still remember watching a news station KDLT in South Dakota that spelled Wednesday, WENDENSday! Yep, never trusted their sources again!

3. Mispronunciation.

4. Chomping.
I googled the definition:
Verb;
Munch or chew vigorously and noisily.
(of a horse) Make a noisy biting or chewing action.

Just thinking about hearing every, little crunch makes me cringe. Therefore, I find myself incapable of properly defining this pet peeve; but will simply leave you with this question, do you want someone to term you with this particular definition of a HORSE?

Ten on Tuesday

1. Hello Tuesday! Can I come up with 9 more random thoughts? We shall see folks, we shall see...
2. Dear Mom, you can thank me later for getting you addicted to Candy Crush Saga; but don't feel obligated to text me in the night what level you have made it to! Love, Me!
3. Dad, I did not introduce you to Candy Crush Saga so you will just have to blame Mom for that one!
4. What do you think of my new blog design? It had been awhile since a good updating, I think I like it!
5. Our summer reading program has begun at the library.I took Klayton to get books this morning and of course they were all about dogs!
6. Am I the only one who dreads cooking in the summer heat?
7. Today I went to the gas station to buy a 12 pack of pop. The cashier said that if I bought a 2nd it was like 1/2 price; but I didn't have enough cash. I told her I would just pass on it and she told me to go get another one and she would take care of it! What a sweet blessing!
8. This may or may not be considered strange; but Klayton likes to drink steak sauce right from the bottle! We open the fridge and he is found trying to sneak a drink...no clue where this like for steak sauce came from!
9. I baked these cookies last night and they are already gone!

10. It may or may not have taken me all day to come up with the above random thoughts. Nonetheless, it is accomplished and I hope you had a Happy Tuesday!

Waiting for a Rainbow

I recently read a blog that literally brought me to tears through this statement,

"Grateful for the rain in my life, for it most certainly causes me to grow."

I know I don't get overly personal on here; but...since December 20th of 2011 my little family has faced some of our darkest days. Days that I NEVER want to repeat and I HOPE that it was the hardest time of our lives that we will ever have to face; but God knows best!

I just don't feel "right" about sharing the battle we faced. But, I will share some other things...

"Grateful for the rain in my life, for it most certainly causes me to grow."

I struggle with infertility, we tried for 18 months before conceiving Klayton...this time around I have had a miscarriage and am still waiting. Klayton was most definitely worth the wait and I know the child I am yearning for will be as well. Unfortunately, I am not always grateful for the rain while I wait. Yes, I love rain when I'm safely indoors and I can hear it pitter patter against the roof/window; but I don't like it when I have to get out in it to do grocery shopping! I like to think that I am snuggled safely inside my house enjoying the rain in my life; but I'm not I'm out there a big mess, makeup disheveled from tears that have been shed and the gloom rain can bring can be seen in my eyes not enjoying this season of my life as I tromp through the puddles carrying all my baggage-trying to get out of the rain as fast as I can. (Did you catch that I have been trying to be metaphorical? Hopefully you understood my metaphors...)

Source: google.com via Kendra on Pinterest

Grateful for the rain in my life, for it most certainly causes me to grow.

This convicted me to the point of tears, I cried out to God and thanked Him for what He is doing in my life. Two days later I was asking,
"Why me?" "
"Why does it have to be so hard?!"

Am I the only one who gets convicted, acts upon it and then just as quickly forget how real and desperate that desire was at the time to just trust God to make that beautiful rainbow to appear when the rain ceases?

Grateful for the rain in my life, for it most certainly causes me to grow.

If this statement was true in my life, I would embrace the rain. I would run outside and let it wash over me, let God do the purging in my life to do what is necessary to make that rainbow appear!

But, I realized being grateful is a choice! I must choose to be grateful while I wait for a rainbow! So, tonight I will choose to dance in the rain and enjoy what and who I have now!

10 on Tuesday-Pinterest

1. On Saturday I hosted a Scentsy party and made these yummy treats,

They were a hit...gone by Sunday and made a new batch last night. There are a few left...

2. I also made this punch,
. I wasn't sure about the pineapple and lemonade combo; but it definitely hit the spot and will be seen in future parties I host!

3. My hair has been SO dry as of late and in desperate need of moisture therapy. I decided it was the perfect opportunity to try this
. My hair was left super soft and this routine is going to be a regular routine!

4. My complexion has seen much improvement as of late; but my pores seem humongo-yes that is word! I found this pin,
and I am loving it. I can actually feel it working! I used real lemons and so I keep it in the fridge and in the heat we have been experiencing lately it feels quite refreshing!

5. I am 31 now and they say as you age its even more important to be moisturizing. So...I'm using this
and my skin is feeling super soft!

6. I love having my nails painted; but I am horrible at maintaining my paint job. I am experimenting with this
and really hoping it works. Once I see the results after a few days I will move it over to my, I Pinned It and Did It board!

7. This is a recipe that I use A LOT! So thought I would share again!

8. Puzzles are SO expensive. And this is why I will be putting this pin to use this week!

9. Um, I don't know if my eyes looked this good; but I tried doing this and loved the look!

10. I love Pinterest and find myself pinning a lot of things I never do. So, I am purposing to not pin anymore until I put a notch in my current pins! Happy experimenting to me!

10 on Tuesday

1. I want to say, Happy Birthday to my friend BobbiJo! She turns 30 today!
2. I have kept busy unpacking and unpacking some more. Still realizing we have so much stuff.
3. Thursday we take off to Michigan. So, in the middle of unpacking I will be packing up as well!
4. Klayton is doing well. Our only road block still to conquer is his new room. He doesn't like to go to bed alone and wakes up in the night.
5. I really am tired, yet here I am in the night blogging.
6. Our van had to go see the mechanic. Because of this we have a "loaner"-a brand new truck! Needless to say, we took it out for a spin last night.
7. I'm learning, "you don't have to have it all figured out to move forward".
8. I've neglected my Scentsy biz as of late. Anyone in need of any Scentsy? Comment for information and for a good deal!
9. Another lesson I'm learning, do not let the opinions of others consume you. Usually, when a person has an opinion about you they have already made up their mind and there's no changing it.
10. Have a Happy Tuesday and don't live in the past it can't be changed now.

3 Cheese Chicken Alfredo

Tonight concluded one week if new recipes! It was more of a feat than I anticipated it would be! Ha! Apparently, the cooking rut I was in was very deep!

I followed the recipe below exactly as written; but next time I will do some tweaking. I didn't like the taste of the ricotta, next I will do 1/2 cottage cheese and 1/2 ricotta to avoid that dry taste. I also will add more seasoning, like onion and basil? Maybe some sage and thyme as well. Also, as I made the recipe I realized I was cooking a lot so I divided it up into two 9x9 dishes and will freeze one for later.

Ingredient Checklist:

1 (16-ounce) package penne or elbow macaroni
2 (10-ounce) containers refrigerated Alfredo sauce
1 (8-ounce) container sour cream
1 (15-ounce) container ricotta cheese
2 garlic clove, minced
3 cups cooked chicken, chopped
2 large eggs, lightly beaten
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
2 cups mozzarella cheese

Directions:

•Prepare pasta according to package directions; drain and return to pot.
•Stir together all ingredients except mozzarella cheese.
•Spread mixture into a lightly greased 13- x 9-inch baking dish. •Sprinkle evenly with mozzarella cheese.
•Bake at 350° covered for 30 minutes or until bubbly.

Olive Garden Copycat Breadsticks

Today was just not my day. And Fridays are always homemade pizza night if we're home. But, I needed to keep with trying a new recipe as after today I only have one day to complete!
Since I was not about to forego a Friday might tradition of homemade pizza I decided to attempt, Olive Garden copycat breadsticks! It was a success! I don't think they tasted JUST like Olive Garden; but they were still a win that will be used in the future!

Copycat Olive Garden Breadsticks:
(Tweaked by me for the bread machine)

Ingredient Checklist:
•1 cup and 2 tbs warm water
•2 tbs sugar
•1 3/4 salt
•3 tbs oil
•3 1/4 c flour
•1 1/4 tsp bread machine yeast

Topping Checklist:
•2 tbs butter/margarine
•1/2 tsp salt
•1/4 tsp garlic powder

Crescent Burgers

Ingredient Checklist:

*1 pound of ground beef
*Worcestershire sauce
*1 Egg
*1/3 packet of dry onion soup mix
*1/2 tsp of black pepper
*2/3 cup of cheddar cheese
*1 roll of crescents

Directions:

*Preheat oven to 375
*Brown meat. Drain excess fat.
*In a medium size bowl mix – 1/2 cup of cheese, onion soup mix, couple drops of Worcestershire sauce, pepper; meat.
*Unroll the crescents. Place a rounded tablespoon of the meat mixture towards the larger end of the crescent dough
Roll – I personally made them into little pockets.
*Place crescents onto a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper.
*Brush the tops of the dough with an egg wash ( simply break and egg in a bowl and whisk egg until well blended and 1 tablespoon of water to the mix).
*Sprinkle the remaining cheese on top of the egg wash and bake for 10 – 15 minutes.

This recipe was yummy and Klayton approved-he ate two!
I tweaked the recipe a little by browning the meat with the onion soup mix! I also discovered my eggs were expired so I used oil to brush the tops with!

Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes

Day 3 is in the books! Tonight's recipe was fun for me, I really enjoyed the "whisking" while making the cheese sauce! The food was delicious and has been considered a keeper!

Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes
Adapted from Rachael Ray

Ingredient Checklist:
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 pound ground beef
1 softball-sized onion, chopped
1 green pepper, chopped
2 tablespoons steak sauce, such as A-1
1 cup beef stock (I actually used beef broth and it worked great!)
Salt and ground black pepper
4 dinner rolls (I did 6 small rolls)
1 tablespoon butter
1 tablespoon flour
1 cup milk
1 cup provolone, shredded

Directions:
In large skillet over medium-high heat add the oil and then brown the ground beef, about 5-6 minutes. Add the onion and green pepper and cook another 3-4 minutes, until the vegetables start to get tender. Stir in the steak sauce and beef stock, season with salt and pepper, bring up to a bubble and cook about 2 minutes.

Split open rolls and remove most of the soft insides, leaving a bed to hold the meat mixture. Toast the rolls and set aside.

While the meat is cooking, melt the butter in a medium-size pot over medium-high heat. Stir in the flour and cook about 1 minute. Whisk in milk, bring up to a bubble and let thicken, about 2 minutes. Turn off heat and stir in the cheese.

To serve, place a scoopful of the meat mixture onto the bottom of the rolls, then top with the cheese sauce and replace the top of the roll.

Crockpot Chicken and Dumplings

I can successfully check off day 2 of a week of new recipes! I realize some may be thinking, "chicken and dumplings, new?" It's true, until today I had never made chicken and dumplings! Of course I've ate it; but its been years since I've even had it! Thankfully, this recipe was a success! I think my husband going back for 3rds is what classifies it as success!

Chicken and Dumplings

Ingredient Checklist:
•4-6 boneless skinless chicken breasts
•2 tablespoons butter
•2 small cans cream of chicken soup
•1 small can chicken broth
•1 onion diced (I used a 1/4 of one)
•1 tablespoon dried parsley
•4 grands flaky refrigerator biscuits (I used five)

Directions:
Put the chicken, butter, cream of chicken, chicken broth, parsley and onions in the crock pot and cook on high for four to six hours. Mine only needed five, and probably didn’t even need that much.
As the chicken cooks and gets tender, break it up with a spoon or fork, whatever.
Get your biscuits and cut them into nine pieces. I kind of rolled them into balls to ensure they stayed whole but it’s not necessary. Stir into chicken mixture and cook for another hour.

10 on Tuesday

1. The only snow I have found here comes in the form of a plastic snowman! Klayton is NOT impressed!

2. While here in Arizona we have been staying very busy. Busy is good though...we end up in bed earlier than usual just because we are SO tired!
3. Yumminess in a bag!

4. I got my mom hooked to Pinterest! You are very welcome Mom! Haha!
5. Speaking of Pinterest...the past 3 days I have tried 3 new ways to style my hair because if it. Yesterday I did one that made my hair extremely curly and I couldn't figure out how to tame. As I'm staring in the mirror at the puffiness before me, Joseph called to inform me that we were going to lunch with another family and he would soon be picking me up! Of all the days; but thankfully my hair settled a little and looked acceptable.
6. Tired boy! I think he is going through a growth spurt?

7. Lesson as a Mommy...once you think you are getting motherhood figured out you realize you don't have a clue.
8. Unfortunately, I am really going to have to watch my data usage for the rest of the month. Apparently, Klayton and I have watched 1 to many video clips...
9. Last week we went to a Christmas party and did a white elephant gift exchange. I ended up bringing home a flying sock monkey...hilarious! You shoot it in the air like a slingshot and it screams!
10. I think this post might of been slightly boring...I really wanted to say that I posted 2 days in a row! Which is almost unbelievable and if there wasn't proof!! Nonetheless, HappyTuesday!

Doughnuts

I pinned this recipe a long time ago on Pinterest as I remembered my mom making these doughnuts when I was a kid! Wow...that was a really bad run on sentence...
Let me just tell you they were delicious and so easy!
Directions:
*Put oil in skillet about a 1/4 inch to fill.
*As the oil begins to warm, take the package of biscuits-do not use the flaky kind or layers! Punch out hole into center of biscuit.
*Place biscuits into skillet, flip when golden brown.
*When both sides are golden place onto paper towel to absorb extra oil.
*Dip into melted butter-I melted one tube of butter.
*Coat with powder sugar and enjoy!

Lazy Chocolate Chip Cookies

I was in the mood to bake; but cleaning up a mess is no fun! SO, I figured if the recipe has the word LAZY in it...
Found this recipe on Pinterest! The actual recipe calls for mini chocolate chips; but I used the regular baking chips!
•Preheat oven to 350
Ingredients:
•5 tbs melted butter
•2 cups chocolate chips
•2 eggs beaten
•1 box yellow or white cake mix
Directions:
•Combine butter and eggs, beat thoroughly.
•Mix in cake mix and chocolate chips.
•Spread mixture in 9x13 pan.
•Bake 20 minutes.
